According to a new report from The Elec, Apple has cancelled a cooperation project with Samsung, which plans to use the OLED display developed by Samsung for the 10.86-inch iPad Air that will be launched.

People familiar with the matter said that the reason the project was stopped was that the “single-layer” structure of OLED panels did not meet Apple’s requirements, or that Samsung had profitability problems, or both.

“Single layer” refers to the widely used OLED panel structure, where red, green, and blue form an emission layer. According to reports, Apple is not satisfied with the brightness level of single-layer OLED panels, and is also worried about the service life of the panels, because consumers usually hold iPads for longer periods of time compared with smartphones, and smartphone upgrades The cycle is shorter.

Instead, Apple hopes to use a two-layer tandem structure for its first OLED iPad, that is, stacking two red, green and blue emitting layers, which will double the brightness and extend the life of the panel four times.

However, according to reports, Samsung has only achieved the commercialization of a single-layer structure, either incapable or unwilling to provide a two-layer structure technology.

It is said that profitability is also a factor in Samsung’s unwillingness to provide this technology. Unless Samsung can confirm that the OLED iPad Air will be sold for a long time, it is not worthwhile to prepare for the product’s back-end module process.

It is understood that OLED technology is very expensive, which is one reason why Apple has only used small devices such as iPhone and Apple Watch so far. OLED has better brightness, higher contrast, deeper blacks and wider viewing angles. (Source: IT House)
